There’s no such thing as a choice that doesn’t mean anything. No matter how small you may feel, every little action you take makes a difference.
So, if you care about helping the environment and making the world a little better, these are four choices you can make for a more sustainable future.
1.Browse second-hand stores
Charity stores and second-hand shops exist in even the smallest of villages and are a great way to sustainably shop for your fashion.
When you buy second hand, you’re giving a piece of clothing a new life. You’re preventing it from ending up in the landfill and helping to stop the wasteful demand that every piece of clothing you wear has to be new. And, it’s cheaper so you’ll be able to enjoy the added bonus of more clothing for less.
2.Ditch fast-fashion trends
For those of you new to the term, fast fashion is relatively cheap clothing that’s massed produced for current fashion trends. For example, if the colour baby blue is in fashion, high street stores up and down the country will be flooded with mass-produced baby blue clothing ready to sell. But as soon as the season’s over, baby blue is no longer in style. It no longer gets worn and consumers then have to shop the latest fad that hits the stores.
It’s an incredibly wasteful part of the fashion industry.
The sad fact is that in 2017, it was estimated that £12.5 billion worth of clothing was thrown away in Britain alone due to fast fashion. That’s over 300,000 tonnes of textiles in a landfill. 300,000 tonnes of clothing that could have been recycled, reused or re-purposed.
3. Choose sustainable brands
Fashion is the second biggest polluting industry in the world. But, not every fashion brand is out to harm the environment. Most are trying to make changes that limit their impact. For example, Bonds are on a mission to divert 100% of their waste away from landfill and reduce their carbon immersions by 40%.
They’re not the only ones.
By shopping with these brands, you’re supporting their fight for sustainability. You’re helping to prove that people want sustainable fashion, which will help the other companies stand up and take notice.
4. Pick clothing built to last
When it comes to picking sustainable fashion choices for the future, it’s important to pick clothing and accessories that are built to last. This works in two ways. The first is to make choices that you know you’ll like as the years go on and ditch the fast-fashion trends that you know you’ll grow tired of quickly. The second is to invest a little more into high-quality clothing that’s designed to last – not fall apart after a couple of months. This means you’re buying and wasting less with every choice.
It’s up to you to be the change – The world won’t change without you. It’s up to you to be a part of the movement and help drive brands and fashion into a more sustainable future with every choice you make.
Let’s start making the right ones.
