Myths and tales abound about how one can eat their way to better arousal or sexual energy.

We take a look at some foods that are said to be powerful aphrodisiacs:


Okra:  Loaded with magnesium (a natural relaxant). And also full of iron, folate, zinc, and vitamin B. All nutrients that keep your sex organs healthy and happy.


Oysters:  Rich in zinc. Eating them can increase your overall health if you have a deficiency in that area. 


Dark Chocolate:  Contains two chemicals, tryptophan which is a building block of serotonin, a brain chemical involved in sexual arousal. The other, phenylethylamine, a stimulant related to amphetamine, is released in the brain when people fall in love.


Chillies : Contains capsaicin which raises heart rate and increases blood flow


Maca:  Eaten by Peruvians for centuries, the turnip look-alike is chock full of nutrients and has become known as a ‘superfood’ because of this high content . It is high in protein, natural sugars, potassium, iodine, magnesium, calcium and fibre. It is also known as an adaptogen as it ‘adapts’ to the individual body’s requirements without interfering with it’s normal workings.


Ginseng:   Well, a lot of it’s ‘mythical’ powers in this area can be attributed to what it looks like. Even a translation of its name is ,’man root’. It does however contain Vitamins A, B and zinc. The active ingredient  is called ‘ginsengosides’. Consuming ginseng is said to help improve memory and increase energy and stamina. It is also an adaptogen and is said to assist in lowering cholesterol and normalise blood pressure.  In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is said to remove mental and physical fatigue and reduce the effects of old age.

So there are many foods and herbs one can consume to give you that extra boost  in the bedroom but for the most part all of these foods seem to do the same thing, help you to relax.  (There are many more that we haven’t mentioned but  we’re sure by now your get the idea) However, we don’t see anything wrong with giving any of these a go. 

Just remember to get advice from a health care professional first (if you’re going to try Maca or Ginseng)  as we can’t have you having a heart attack at a crucial moment.  Many natural therapies should not be taken with prescription medicines for example, so best to find out first. Otherwise, just stick to the oysters or dark chocolate.

We’re of the opinion that the best aphrodisiac is hearing those magic words on the lips from the one you desire, “ I Love You” and of course allowing your imagination to do the rest.
