When I heard Ben Howard was coming to South Africa, there was only one logical conclusion… I MUST GO. Once that decision was made it was all about planning my 6 hour road trip from the coastal city of Durban, through our beautiful South African Country, to the big city life in Johannesburg.
A little bit of background about Ben incase you don’t know! Benjamin John ‘Ben’ Howard is an English singer songwriter. His first debut into stardom was his album “These Waters”, which set the platform for his deep lyrics and unique guitar skills. He mesmerised his fans with his following albums ‘Every Kingdom’ and “I forget where we were”.
Having not been to Johannesburg in a few years, I had most certainly underestimated exactly what I was walking into upon my arrival, a buzzing city lined with traffic and a cold that can only be described as ‘chilled to the bone’.
Thankfully on Saturday morning we were was blessed with sunny skies, the perfect scene for a winter afternoon orchestrated by the talented UK lad Ben Howard. When I arrived at Zoo Lake the line was long and wide, a diverse crowd ranging from families to babies and of course, the youth of today.
I walked around to see what was on offer for a bite to eat, to get me fueled up for the big BH performance and I was really surprised by the selection of food trucks! From pizza to nachos, or vet koek burgers! I decided to indulge in a vegetarian pizza, which had Parmesan, rocket and avocado on it, from a stall called ‘The Brohemian’ – you should give them a try if ever you are in Johannesburg!
The crowd got amped as the chords to “forget where we were” began and Ben Howard took the stage. A few moments later the crowd moved closer and within minutes everyone was chanting his lyrics and swaying to the sound of his guitar. The atmosphere was thrilling as his voice echoed through the park creating an ambient mood for the love of his music. I loved hearing his latest album and his voice was incredible!
As the concert came to and end, the temperature dropped, the sun set over Jo’burg’s city skyline, which made the last few songs something memorable. A big shout out to Seed Experiences for doing such an amazing job!!
All in all, I was blown away with Ben Howard’s performance!! For those of you who love alternative, indie, folk music you should definitely try and catch him live, it’s an experience you won’t forget.
